Performing Umrah is a deeply meaningful act of worship, and learning the essential duas beforehand can help you complete each stage with confidence. If you are performing Umrah for the first time, read our complete step-by-step Umrah guide to understand Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and the final rites. This guide explains the Umrah duas step by step, from entering Ihram and reciting the Talbiyah to Tawaf, Sa’i and completing Umrah, with Arabic text, transliteration, English translation, Urdu translation and religious references.
You do not need to memorise a separate dua for every circuit of Tawaf or every journey between Safa and Marwah. Islam provides established supplications for particular occasions, but you can also remember Allah, recite the Qur’an and make sincere personal duas in your own language.
For British Muslims travelling from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow or elsewhere in the UK, this practical guide will help you prepare spiritually before your journey to Makkah.
What duas do you recite during Umrah?
The principal supplications to learn are the Talbiyah after entering Ihram, the remembrance of Allah when approaching the Black Stone, the Qur’anic dua Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah during Tawaf, and the established remembrance at Safa and Marwah during Sa’i.
There is no authentic, compulsory dua assigned to each of the seven circuits of Tawaf or each passage of Sa’i. Personal supplications are permitted, and you can ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, protection and acceptance throughout your pilgrimage.
1. What to learn before starting Umrah
Understanding the order of the rites makes it easier to know when each supplication is relevant.
| Stage | What to do | Key supplication |
| 1. Ihram | Enter the state of Ihram at the appropriate Miqat | Intention in the heart (Allahumma labbaik ‘umratan) |
| 2. Talbiyah | Respond to Allah’s call as you travel towards Makkah | Labbayk Allahumma labbayk |
| 3. Masjid al-Haram | Enter the mosque respectfully | General mosque-entry dua |
| 4. Tawaf | Complete seven circuits around the Ka’bah | Allahu Akbar at the Black Stone; general dhikr and personal duas |
| 5. After Tawaf | Pray two rak’ahs where feasible | No compulsory post-Tawaf dua |
| 6. Sa’i | Walk seven passages between Safa and Marwah | Established remembrance at both hills |
| 7. Completion | Shave or shorten the hair as applicable | No specific compulsory completion dua |
2. Dua for entering Ihram for Umrah
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters to perform Umrah. Before reaching the relevant Miqat, prepare yourself, follow the applicable Ihram rules and make your intention to perform Umrah.
The intention is made in the heart. There is no single obligatory verbal formula that must be pronounced for the intention to be valid.
1. The Intention for Umrah
Transliteration: Allahumma labbaik ‘umratan.
English Translation: “O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.”
Urdu Translation:
Reference: Standard Sunnah practice recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari.
2. Talbiyah: The essential supplication after entering Ihram
After entering Ihram, recite the Talbiyah frequently as you travel towards Makkah.
Transliteration
Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.
English translation
Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner; here I am. Surely, all praise, blessings and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1549; also reported in Sahih Muslim.
Repeat the Talbiyah regularly until you begin Tawaf for Umrah. Men traditionally recite it audibly, while women recite it in a manner appropriate to their circumstances.
3. Dua when entering Masjid al-Haram
When entering Masjid al-Haram, follow the general Sunnah of entering a mosque with the right foot and asking Allah for His mercy.
Transliteration: Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik.
English translation: O Allah, open the gates of Your mercy for me.
Urdu translation:
Reference: Sahih Muslim 713.
When you first see the Ka’bah, you may praise Allah and make personal supplications. Do not assume that a particular formula circulated online is an established prophetic dua unless it has a reliable source.
4. Duas for Tawaf: What to recite during the seven circuits
Tawaf involves seven circuits around the Ka’bah, beginning at the Black Stone. Each circuit follows the established route around the Ka’bah.
There is no prescribed individual dua for each circuit of Tawaf. You can recite Qur’an, make dhikr, seek forgiveness and ask Allah for your needs throughout the seven circuits.
At the Black Stone
When you reach the Black Stone and begin a circuit, say:
Arabic:
Transliteration: Allahu Akbar.
English translation: Allah is the Greatest.
Urdu translation:
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 1613.
If the area is crowded, do not push, hurt others or obstruct the flow of pilgrims to reach the Black Stone. Follow the mosque’s current arrangements and gesture towards it when appropriate.
The dua between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone
One of the most useful supplications during Tawaf is the Qur’anic dua recited between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone.
Transliteration
Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.
English translation
Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, Qur’an 2:201; Sunan Abi Dawud 1892.
What can you recite during the rest of Tawaf?

You can use short, meaningful phrases of remembrance:
- سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ — SubhanAllah: Glory be to Allah.
Alhamdulillah: All praise belongs to Allah.
La ilaha illallah: There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
Astaghfirullah: I seek forgiveness from Allah.
What should you do after Tawaf?
After completing seven circuits, pray two rak’ahs where feasible, often near Maqam Ibrahim if doing so does not obstruct other worshippers. If the area is crowded, pray elsewhere in the mosque.
There is no specific compulsory dua after the seventh circuit. Continue with the established rites and seek qualified guidance if you have a question about a particular circumstance.
5. Dua when drinking Zamzam water
After praying behind Maqam Ibrahim, make your way to the Zamzam drinking stations. Drink the blessed water while standing, facing the Qiblah, and reciting this specific dua taught by Ibn Abbas (RA):
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا، وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan wasi’an, wa shifa’an min kulli da’in.
English Translation: “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant sustenance, and a cure from every disease.”
Urdu Translation:
Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah (3062).
6. Dua when approaching Safa for Sa’i
Sa’i is the ritual of walking seven passages between Safa and Marwah. It recalls the efforts of Hajar (peace be upon her) as she sought water for her son, Ismail (peace be upon him).
When approaching Safa for the first time, recite the following verse.
Transliteration: Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha’a’irillah.
English translation: Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.
Urdu translation:
Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, Qur’an 2:158.
7. Dua at Safa and Marwah
When you reach Safa, face the direction of the Ka’bah, raise your hands for supplication and recite the established remembrance. The same remembrance is recited at Marwah.
Transliteration
English translation
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion and all praise, and He has power over everything.
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant and defeated the confederates alone.
Reference: Sahih Muslim 1218.
8. Dua after completing Sa’i
After the seventh passage, you finish Sa’i at Marwah. There is no specific authentic dua that must be recited immediately afterwards.
O Allah, accept my worship, forgive my shortcomings and grant me the opportunity to visit Your Sacred House again.
You can praise Allah and thank Him for enabling you to complete the rite. This is a suggested personal dua rather than a prescribed prophetic supplication.
9. How do you complete Umrah?
After Tawaf and Sa’i, complete the required hair-cutting or shaving ritual.
- Men: Shaving the head is generally preferable, although shortening the hair is also valid.
- Women: Cut a small portion from the ends of the hair according to the relevant scholarly guidance.
- After completing the required rites: You leave the state of Ihram, provided the requirements of your Umrah have been fulfilled.
There is no specific compulsory dua for cutting the hair or for the exact moment of completing Umrah. You may say Alhamdulillah, praise Allah and ask Him to accept your worship.
